UN Secretary-General António Guterres has sent a letter to Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government. In the letter, he expressed the United Nations' strong support for the ongoing reforms under Dr. Yunus' leadership and voiced concern over Bangladesh's humanitarian crisis, particularly the Rohingya situation.
In the letter, the Secretary-General thanked Dr. Yunus for the letter received from him on February 4th and mentioned that the February 25th letter clarified the UN’s position on Bangladesh's reform process and the resolution of the Rohingya crisis. Guterres also stated that the United Nations would continue to work towards addressing the humanitarian impact of the Rohingya crisis between Bangladesh and Myanmar and would help create favorable conditions for the safe and voluntary repatriation of the Rohingya.
Furthermore, the UN Secretary-General stated that the UN Country Teams would be instructed to provide humanitarian aid to the Rohingya in Rakhine State and support the livelihood of the communities there. The UN will also coordinate efforts to ensure safe and sustainable humanitarian assistance for the people in Myanmar. All of these efforts will remain a priority for the UN in addressing the ongoing crisis.
In the final part of the letter, Guterres expressed optimism that a high-level conference on the situation of the Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar would attract global attention. He mentioned that this conference would open new pathways to solutions that would offer broader proposals for the Rohingya and other minority groups. Later, during his visit to Dhaka on March 13th, he plans to discuss various issues in detail with Dr. Yunus.
This letter is expected to strengthen the cooperation between the United Nations and the government of Bangladesh, particularly in resolving the Rohingya crisis. The UN Secretary-General’s initiative could be a significant step in addressing the crisis in Bangladesh.
